Women and Girls
Stream Outline: Women and girls are still disproportionately affected by and underrepresented in political decision making worldwide. This stream will evaluate how international development has approached these problems and its role in addressing them.
Speaker: Sarah Carson
Sarah is the Women’s Rights Campaign Manager at the leading international charity Action Aid. She is also currently working as an art psychotherapist at the Women and Girls Network and has previously worked as Advocacy and Campaigns Project Officer at Save the Children. After completing her degree at the University of Nottingham, Sarah went on to complete an MA at Goldsmiths College and an MSc in Political Theory at LSE. She has written extensively about women’s rights and gender equality, including articles on the Huffington Post about the sexual assault that women endure on our streets around the world daily. Sarah has worked with women’s rights organisations in a number of developing countries, is passionate about women’s empowerment and gender equality and has called for action in strengthening policies aimed at women and girls and changing mindsets.
Speaker: Alyson Brody
Alyson is a freelance social development researcher and consultant with 20 years' experience in the field of gender and social development. A social anthropologist by training, Alyson has a core conviction that a more nuanced understanding of people, relationships and culture is the key to positive, meaningful social change. The former senior manager of BRIDGE, a global gender and development research and knowledge programme, Alyson has led innovative, collaborative research and knowledge sharing programmes with a focus on the effective integration of gender equality and women's and girls' empowerment into critical areas of development that include governance, unpaid care work, gender-based violence, food security and climate change. She was co-leader of the IDS Gender and Sexuality Cluster from 2014 to 2016, and is a former Board member of the UK Gender and Development Network. Alyson has specialist knowledge of South East Asia (particularly Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand) and Francophone Africa.
Speaker: Nicola Chanamuto
Nicola is a freelance consultant in the Gender and Development field with a passion for projects concerning women and girls. She has 11 years’ experience working with local government bodies, grassroots charities, international aid agencies and social enterprises. Nicola has country experience in China, India and Singapore and has trained to postgraduate level in anthropology, gender and development. She has a specific interest in female labour migration and the care economy of gender and development. Prior to consulting, Nicola worked with the international aid organisation the Japan International Cooperation Agency as a Research Officer. She has also produced important work for academic and policy- maker audiences including a book chapter on gender and urban poverty for the Indian Government in partnership with DfID and a paper on projects working to engage marginalised girls in education for UNESCO. She has also designed a business training workshop for female entrepreneurs in the Philippines and has a strong passion for the equipping, training and empowering of women and girls.
