Dr Judith Highgate - former National Director, Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters (SARAID) (2:05 pm - 2:50 pm)
'While there's life, there's hope......International Urban Search and Rescue: An NGO's story' Dr Judith Highgate graduated with a medical degree from King’s College London in July 2005 and completed the Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the University of Liverpool in December 2007. She has been a member of SARAID since May 2005, recently completed a period serving as the charity’s National Director, and was the team doctor with SARAID during deployments to Mexico following severe flooding and to Sumatra and Haiti following major earthquakes. 'While there's life, there's hope......International Urban Search and Rescue: An NGO's story' Rob is a dedicated emergency responder with over 20 years of UK fire and rescue experience. Rob has responded as a team leader for the SARAID to some of the world’s worst disasters including the Mozambique floods, Sri Lanka tsunami, Pakistan and Haiti earthquakes. Rob also owns a disaster management and business continuity consultancy, Halo Crisis Management. Rob is currently preparing for his PhD in organizational learning and crisis response and is often seen walking the hills of Bath with his black Labrador, Merlin. |

'Air Pollution and Climate Change – Meeting multiple objectives in Developing Countries' Tim’s work focuses on the interface of science and policy in the UK and abroad. With the Air Quality Management Resource Centre at UWE, he supported Defra in the UK Local Air Quality Management process, extending the learning from European experiences to provide assistance in Thailand, India, China, South America and South Africa. In 2011 he worked at the Department of Energy and Climate Change and is currently involved in low-carbon travel behaviour projects, reviewing the Thematic Strategy on Air pollution for the European Commission, and extending work from his DECC Fellowship with DfT, DCLG and Defra. |
Adam Corner - Research Associate, Cardiff University and Policy Advisor, COIN (10:50 am - 11:35 am)
'Communicating climate change: a challenge for international development' Adam Corner is a Research Associate in the Understanding Risk research group at Cardiff University, and the Policy Advisor for the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN). His research focuses on the psychology of communicating climate change, and he writes regularly for national media such as the Guardian, New Scientist on this subject. Adam is the editor of the Talking Climate website - the gateway to research on climate change communication. Katie Alcott - Founder of FRANK Water Projects (11:45 am - 12:30 pm)
'FRANK Water, the story of a small Bristol social enterprise' Katie founded FRANK Water in 2005 with the aim of raising awareness of world water issues, saving lives by installing clean water systems and raising funds through the sale of bottled water in the UK. Winner of numerous awards, Katie now focuses her time on the charity side of the business, FRANK Water Projects, which has funded 69 sustainable, community run clean water projects in rural India. Dedicated to innovation in the field, research and development of technology and approach are key to the charities future. Antony Turner - founder and Managing Director of CarbonSense (3:00 pm - 3:50 pm)
'The Carbon Challenge – engaging big business and the public' Anthony set up CarbonSense as a company to help organisations genuinely understand climate change and confront the challenges of moving to a low-carbon future. He is also co-founder of Carbon Visuals, a company that turns carbon footprint data into engaging images, films and web-tools. Antony has lectured at major universities and worked with a wide range of organisations including BT, TNT, Honda Formula One and HM Treasury. He believes that a core reason for human society’s indifference to climate change is that greenhouse gases are invisible. |

'Women Rights in Tanzania: Addressing Barriers to Girls Rights to Education in Tanzania' Simon works for CASEC, a small charity organization in Tanzania. He has more than 10 years experience in community developments projects, including working with communities to improve girl child access to education; gender focused budgeting; and influencing government policy decisions on education at both local and national level. Simon did his postgraduate trainings at Mzumbe University in Tanzania. |

Chair: Rachel Smith - Operations and Programmes Manager, Global Giving
Rachel helped co-found GlobalGiving UK and now heads day to day operations and programmes. Before joining GlobalGiving Rachel worked in marketing and for local government. She has been involved in the voluntary sector, particularly fundraising, from a very young age – she organised her first fundraising event (a local coffee morning) aged 7! Jonny Currie - Co-Founder and Trustee of Generation Development Jonny is a junior doctor and current Trustee for the NGO Generation Development. As a student he was closely involved with the Medsin student global health network. He is interested in supporting young people to advocate for new solutions to global poverty and inequality and is currently expanding a network of global activists focussed on what may replace the Millennium Development Goals after 2015. Dr Adrian Flint - Lecturer in Politics, Bristol University Adrian Flint is currently Lecturer in Development Politics at the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies/University of Bristol. His main research interests lie within the field of North-South relations and include issues such as global trade, poverty alleviation, sustainable development, HIV/AIDS and European Union development policy. His most recent monograph, HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa: Politics, Aid and Globalization, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2011. |
